Across the United States, our great mission-driven civic organizations are navigating unprecedented challenges that threaten their legitimacy, funding, and ability to fulfill their missions. The social sector is evolving in real time under pressure, scrutiny, and constraint. Yet with every challenge comes opportunity. Old models are breaking and new ones are emerging. The next era will be shaped by individuals and organizations spearheading new impact models, reimagining governance structures, and building systems that are more accountable and resilient.

Studies show that organizations that regularly assess their board and staff performance are the most sustainable, successful, and can better execute their core mission. Best practice is to conduct board assessment every 2-3 years. This creates opportunity for discussion and reflection, and to develop a plan to address challenges, implement changes, and continually reflect on other potential improvements. Put simply, board development is an ongoing practice.

Learn More About Melissa’s Coaching Program here. Leaders are being stress-tested like never before. The old playbooks no longer work, certainty is gone, and the pressure to lead with clarity, credibility, and purpose is relentless. American nonprofits are facing unprecedented political, legal, and cultural challenges that threaten their legitimacy, funding, and ability to fulfill their missions. Simultaneously, we are experiencing the largest intergenerational wealth transfer in history unfold in real time: trillions of dollars are moving across generations, along with power, influence, and expectations. This shift isn’t just financial—it’s cultural; and it isn’t just about money—it’s about responsibility. New wealth holders are rewriting the rules around impact, accountability, and legacy. They are less interested in tradition and more focused on outcomes. With these challenges and changes come opportunity: leaders must adapt, develop practices to think systemically, navigate ambiguity, communicate clearly, and lead with integrity. This is why coaching is a non-negotiable. Real leadership development is about expanding capacity under pressure.
Leaders who invest in coaching often gain greater clarity, resilience, and confidence—qualities that are crucial for guiding creative teams and organizations through change. Leaders who are skilled change managers create more change agents. Executive coaching and leadership development helps refine communication styles, manage conflict, and build collaborative environments that empower teams to embrace and excel. This type of support is especially valuable in the nonprofit sector, where missions are deeply tied to meaning, community impact, and creative integrity.

Strategic Planning is an essential best practice for organizational success. MCW Projects facilitates a results-oriented Planning process, focusing on engagement, connection, and alignment. With deep consideration of the current philanthropic and nonprofit landscapes, the multifaceted process is collaborative and consensus-built, producing an action-oriented plan that builds cohesion between staff and board. We believe that an effective and meaningful Planning process produces a roadmap that: Creates consensus through collaboration; Produces a measurable timeline and data-backed financial implications for each goal; Assists with board recruitment and bolsters engagement; Serves as an organizational narrative; Helps prioritize (creating proactivity, NOT reactivity); Creates responsibility and accountability; Increases operational and leadership efficiency and effectiveness; Improves staff and board satisfaction and retention; Manages expectations and deepens trust; and more.

“Nonprofits that are serious about their own sustainability will also be serious about planning for smooth and thoughtful transitions of leadership - as well as making sure their nonprofit is prepared for unexpected departures.” -National Council on Nonprofits.
We are witnessing a generational leadership rupture: large-scale retirements at staff and board levels; lack of succession-planning and investment in leadership development; burnout; generational value differences regarding careers and workplaces. MCW Projects guides organizations through the vital work of transition and succession planning, to clearly define strategies for: talent, stakeholders, resources, philanthropy, crisis capacity, and more.

A Feasibility Study assesses an organization's readiness for a capital campaign. It is a vital tool to assure success. Following the development of a consensus-built Strategic Plan, compelling Case for Support, clear funding priorities, and guiding vision, MCW Projects thoughtfully solicits stakeholder & community feedback, building and deepening relationships; in essence, the first tool of campaign cultivation. Common tracks of inquiry include the organization's readiness, perception of the organization and its leadership, external factors that might impact the campaign's success, feasibility of campaign working goal, the community's philanthropic spirit, and more.

Would a for profit company succeed without data on consumer preferences, price points, demographics, and market value? So why would a nonprofit succeed without data on donor and audience trends, preferences, and values? Arts funding and philanthropy are changing rapidly, throwing organizations into crisis, confusion, and closure. The societal and philanthropic landscapes are different than at any point during the last two generations. Organizations must be attuned to these changes and create strategies from this informed place of strength.
